Wrekin Products E’GRID 2020 geogrid was specified to reinforce the ground during construction of the new £39.5 million Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust mental health unit The Harbour, at Whyndyke Farm in Blackpool.
Civil and Structural consultancy The Alan Johnston Partnership specified 34,000 square metres of E’GRID 2020 geogrid from Wrekin Products for the project. Supplied through specialist merchant Warrington Civils & Lintels, delivery of the E’GRID was timed to meet Kiernan Construction’s installation schedule and the whole order was completed in three days.
Subcontractor Kiernan Construction needed to create a piling mat to support an SF-50 CFA piling rig which was used to construct the building foundations of 97 fifteen metre long reinforced concrete piles. A solution was also required to reinforce existing soils which had a low CBR to support loads from construction vehicles over access roads to the site.
Wrekin Products worked closely with specialist geotechnical designer PaSCoE Ltd to conform to BR470 and achieve a Working Platform Certificate for the piling mat. E’GRID 2020 was used with an increased depth of compacted stone to create a safe working platform.
VINCI Construction UK was appointed contractor for the Lancashire NHS Foundation Trust project, which when completed will have 154 beds. The Harbour will replace existing services in the county with an improved standard of inpatient accommodation.
The entire site was blanketed with a layer of E’GRID 2020 geogrid with compacted stone above. There was a minimum overlap of 300mm to ensure product continuity.
Wrekin Products range of E’GRID biaxial geogrids have been designed to optimise the key properties of rib form, durability and tensile properties. E’GRID is produced from polypropylene on the world’s first fully integrated geogrid production line and is manufactured by punching and stretching high quality sheets of virgin polymer under closely controlled factory conditions. This ensures that the resulting product has high tensile stiffness enabling working loads to be developed at very low levels of strain.
