Aylesbury 7 is a major private and social housing development in Elephant and Castle, South West London. Part of the landscaping design included a new timber decked footbridge that encroached upon root protection areas of protected lime trees. One major problem that arose was the depth of construction required above the tree roots to match new ground levels, ensuring the footbridge aligned with the surrounding landscape.
Normally in these situations a three dimensional cellular confinement system would be used to protect the tree roots. However, due to the 1 metre depth of build up and the deadweight that the infill of a three dimensional cell system would place on the rooting area this was not a solution that the arboricultural consultant would approve.
Landscape Planning contacted Wrekin’s tree root protection department to create a suitable solution.
Wrekin designed an ArborRaft™ TRP system that would accommodate level changes and impose very little loading over the RPA of the trees. The system was complimented by a Root-tex™ 30 high-strength geotextile. The ArborRaft™ was surfaced with a timber decking system which was mechanically fixed to the ArborRaft units.
ArborRaft is a high strength lightweight modular unit that interlocks together to create a true raft effect. The lightweight units are only three kilograms each therefore the deadweight above the tree roots was insignificant compared with a granular filled system.
The location of the development did not lend itself to lots of vehicle movements delivering aggregates. Wrekin delivered the whole system in one load and the installation process saved the contractor time and costs against typical three dimensional cell systems.
The ArborRaft system was installed 1 metre high with subsequent layers connecting together to produce a stable platform in which to build the decking walkway.
The total solution provided the client with a tree root friendly, cost effective, environmentally sympathetic system, providing the developers comfort that the trees would be unaffected by the development and would continue to flourish, bringing the benefits that trees provide to our towns and cities.
