Wrekin installs commemorative LGBTQ access cover Twickenham stadium
We have proudly created and installed a special edition commemorative access cover at Twickenham Stadium – the iconic home of England Rugby – in celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. The uniquely designed Unite D400 cover was unveiled on 25 April during a presentation attended by representatives from Wrekin and Thames Water. Located on the outer concourse, the cover has been crafted as a permanent piece of public infrastructure that highlights the shared commitment to diversity from both Thames Water and the Rugby Football Union (RFU). This marks the fourth LGBTQ+ themed access cover we’ve delivered in collaboration with Thames Water, joining others installed in Reading and Swindon. The Twickenham installation is particularly significant given the stadium’s prominence and visibility, placing the message of inclusion firmly in the spotlight. Each ductile iron cover features icons, logos and the full spectrum of rainbow colours – including black and brown to represent LGBTQ+ people from the BAME community, cast using a pigmented epoxy resin. The design also includes the uplifting message: ‘Every rainbow needs a little water to shine’. To achieve the high-quality finish, our ironwork specialists used a bespoke manufacturing process. This included intricate machining using a precision CNC mill, allowing us to capture detailed features with a 1mm carbide cutter spinning at 26,000rpm. The hand-cast resin colours were followed by a careful polishing process using an air sander to ensure the design stands out proudly against the cover’s surface. |
