Products and advice for Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route

The biggest one-off contract ever awarded to Wrekin Products has seen the civil engineering products specialist supply ironwork for the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR).

Being built by the Connect Roads consortium, consisting of Balfour Beatty, Carillion and Galliford Try (Morrison Construction), construction of the bypass started in February 2015 with the 58km of new road due for completion in the spring of 2018.

Wrekin Products entered discussions about the ironwork required for the project at an early stage, visiting the site, taking measurements and setting out product options that would provide the solutions required.

Manhole covers from Wrekin’s Highway range which are designed and engineered to be smart, reliable in operation and available in all popular configurations were selected.

The covers have a patented frame design with enlarged frame corners and flanges that help to dissipate traffic load. Three-point suspension on the strong and highly durable ductile iron covers ensures non-rock stability.

Highway products satisfy even the most rigorous specification standards, including HA 104/09, BS 7903 and EN 124:2015. With Highway®, Wrekin Products has brought together 30 years of ironwork expertise and skilful design to create the world’s first ironwork range to be Kitemarked to the revised standard BS EN 124:2015.

The range features patented safety provisions including safety keyways, indexed covers and mechanical lifting points. Options of flood protection plates, integral badging and cover locking across the range means all bases are covered.

Geosynthetic solutions

Assistance has been provided with installation on the AWPR, with Wrekin’s technical experts spending time on site to make sure highways standards were met by engineers from a range of backgrounds and with varying levels of experience.

Wrekin has helped the client identify solutions on an on-going basis. Support with the ironwork and bedding methods led to Wrekin assisting with weed suppression requirements. Wrekin offers a wide range of geosynthetic solutions to the construction and transport sectors, backed by an expert, dedicated team.

Commenting on Wrekin’s involvement, Cristiana De Abreu, Senior Civil Engineer, AWPR JV said: “Wrekin have been great, they haven’t let us down on service and the manhole covers are terrific to work with.”

A close working relationship with the client has been maintained throughout, with continuing frequent site visits and technical advice all provided by Wrekin Products to deliver successful, solution-based results.
