Recyclability of ductile iron products

Can ductile iron be recycled?

Ductile iron is a fully recyclable material. All ductile iron products can be recycled at the end of their service life.

Ductile iron is produced primarily from recycled ferrous scrap. During manufacturing, scrap metal is melted and refined before being cast into new components. This process can be repeated indefinitely, which means ductile iron can be recycled over and over again.

Because of this, ductile iron is considered a 100% recyclable material. When a ductile iron product reaches the end of its operational life, it can be collected, melted down, and used to manufacture new iron products.

For infrastructure products such as access covers, frames, and gratings, this recyclability means the material can remain in productive use for generations. Once removed from service, the iron simply returns to the manufacturing cycle and becomes new engineering components.

Environmental sustainability

Recycling ductile iron also supports environmental sustainability. Reusing existing metal reduces the demand for new raw materials, lowers energy consumption compared with producing metal from ore, and helps reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill
