Wrekin commits to green future with ESG report and ISO certification

We are proud to announce that we have recently been accredited with ISO 14001, and today are launching our first environmental, social and governance report (ESG) report.

ISO 14001 is awarded to organisations worldwide that have implemented an effective environmental management system (EMS), providing assurance to stakeholders and customers that we are doing all we can to reduce waste, prevent pollution and improve compliance.

This is the third ISO accreditation we have received, after previously receiving ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 45001 for health and safety.

Terry Moore, health and safety, environmental and quality manager, said: “I’m incredibly proud that Wrekin has been awarded three ISO certifications, but the EMS accreditation in particular is hugely significant and underpins our commitment to protecting the environment. It has been eight months in the making and is so important in the current climate, as it is something customers are actively looking for in their suppliers.

It’s crucial that we show not only our social conscience, but that we are also doing everything we can to reduce our impact on the environment and secure a greener future. Being able to add ISO 14001 to our arsenal will go a long way towards demonstrating that.

Further building on our green credentials, we have also launched our first ESG report to coincide with our 40th birthday – setting out the company’s ambitions and commitments to reducing carbon.

Simon Turner, commercial director at Wrekin, said: “Reporting on ESG credentials is becoming more and more prevalent, particularly in construction. We work in an industry that requires high levels of energy to create our products, particularly ductile iron, so a large focus for us in this ESG report has been looking at how we can reduce our carbon impact during the manufacturing process.

“To do this, we’re creating environmental product declarations (EPDs) for each individual product, which will show a breakdown of its environmental impact and carbon content. By introducing these EPDs, we’re making sure that as a business we are fully accountable when it comes to our carbon footprint and can, therefore, look at ways to minimise this.

“As we are celebrating our 40th birthday this year, now felt like the perfect time to not just reflect on Wrekin’s past successes, but to also look forward at how the company is going to develop over the next 40 years. The combination of our ISO accreditation and our newly published ESG report shows that we are fully committed to staying ahead of the curve – we are already thinking about the important role Wrekin is going to play as we head into a new chapter.”
