On-site coating of ductile cast iron parts

Introduction

Where the loss of barrier coatings has occurred, usually through trafficking and/or light corrosion, a site-applied paint coating may be successfully brush-applied to refresh the surface finish of ductile iron parts.

In order to achieve this, Wrekin have selected single-component paints compatible with its original factory-applied coatings, so that site-application as a coating-restoration to small areas of ironwork is straightforward for competent personnel

What you will need as a minimum

  • Wrekin-supplied (or specified) paint of sufficient volume to provide the necessary area coverage
    • Wrekin recommends Thomas Howse QAD 0090 (brush applied, black)
  • Paint brushes / rollers
  • Wire brushes
  • Dust-pan and brush
  • Tooling to open paint tins
  • Masking materials (for sensitive paving surrounds), BS7903 heavy duty Lifting Keys (if covers are to be removed for coating)
  • A safe environment / appropriate traffic management
  • Coated-surface protection in the event of inclement weather

Safety considerations

  • Although the paints selected will have inherent low VoCs and/or flammable solvents, any re-coating works should occur in well ventilated areas or, ideally, outdoors.
  • Operators should wear suitable PPE [for dust generating and paint operations] comprising of, but not limited to: Goggles, gloves, dust mask, hi-vis trousers and jacket, all as per the paint MSDS.
  • First Aid Kit with eye-wash.
  • MSDS for the Paint being used (obtain prior to use).
  • Provisions for spillage of small volumes (<5 Litres) of paint containing the ingredients listed in the MSDS.
  • 2Nr Paint-compatible Fire Extinguishers.
  • Ensure coating works and associated materials are located away from sources of combustion.
  • Ensure pedestrian traffic is kept away from the works operations until the coatings have cured. e.g. using signage, barriers, etc.
  • Disposal arrangements for residual paint in tins. N.B. The cured paint is inert and may be disposed of as non-hazardous landfill

Method of application

Assuming covers will remain in the frame
  • Wire brush the cover surface and any required frame edges to remove loose paint and light corrosion particles taking care to avoid contamination of sensitive paving surrounds.
  • Use masking materials where appropriate.
  • Brush-apply the paint coating to the ironwork surface(s) of sufficient thickness to achieve the desired aesthetic finish.
  • Protect the surfaces from inclement weather and trafficking until cured sufficiently to be practically impervious to both.
