National Highways skid resistance requirements

The latest version of CD 534, now at version 0.2.0 and published in September 2025, maintains the requirement for skid resistance testing using the WRc method. This approach remains the recognised standard for BS EN 124 compliant coarse textured cover surfaces.

The WRc test employs a pneumatic tyre that moves sideways across the surface to measure resistance to skid, providing a consistent and accurate result. This method replaced the older Pendulum Test, which could produce variable readings depending on surface texture, test location and operator technique.

The minimum requirement to have a PSRV of greater than 60 for BS EN 124 Group 4 applications remains unchanged under CD 534 v0.2.0.

All Wrekin triangular and Unite chequer designs continue to exceed this performance level.
