Our Solutions

Working platforms

Piling platforms are essential for carrying heavy tracked plant, such as piling rigs and cranes. These vital, temporary measures must deliver safety while being as time and cost effective as possible.

Keeping costs under control

Accelerating your construction programme

One of our value engineering solutions to solve these problems is geogrids – an under-utilised solution, which can reduce the thickness of a working platform, typically by 50 per cent, resulting in substantially reduced construction cost and time.

Along with significant cost reductions, geogrids improve site health and safety, accelerate construction timescales and reduce the project’s overall environmental impact.

This is because when granular particles are compacted over these grids, they partially penetrate and project through the apertures to create a stiff and positive interlock. The load dispersal effect from the interlocking mechanism increases shearing resistance within the aggregates, improving compaction and allowing the granular thickness to be decreased – ultimately reducing construction time and cost.

Intelligent adoption of geogrid

The intelligent adoption of geogrids offers two key benefits:

  • Significant upfront savings during construction works
  • Further cost reductions when at the end of the programme

The positive effects are then felt across the supply chain. House builders, for example, are facing huge demands to construct additional housing but also need to tackle challenges such as improving build times while minimising overheads. This is where we can prove invaluable, helping house builders to find additional time in the build programme – and before the first on-site construction even begins. Recycled aggregates can be used to further reduce costs and site CO2 emissions.

Supporting tender bids

We’re an advocate of early engagement because if a Wrekin engineering manager is engaged at the tender stage, the impact on the savings to reduce time and money can also assist contractors in winning tenders.

Another benefit of early engagement is that geogrids can be manufactured to the exact width that the contractor needs, suiting the site-specific requirements and creating an even more cost-effective grid. Simply removing a longitudinal overlap in the geogrid layout can save a further 10 per cent in product costs alone. Small changes but big savings are available.

Severn Trent Earl Shilton
Success Stories

Generating significant savings during temporary works

Our technical team worked in partnership with Severn Trent Water’s contractors to create a temporary working platform at sewage treatment works at Earl Shilton, south west of Leicester, using a high-performance E’GRID geogrid.

Throughout the project, we supported the coordination of the proposals and collaborated with the full supply chain, the scheme designers, and Tier 1 contractor Stantec.

Great Yarmouth Outer Harbour

When Peel Ports Great Yarmouth was selected to be the base for the construction and installation activities for the Galloper and East Anglia ONE wind farms in the Southern North Sea. A significant part of the works required was to create a 100,000m2 yard storage and marshalling area for the components of the wind turbines before they are shipped out to the wind farm sites.

Earl Shilton Treatment Works

Wrekin Products was approached by Severn Trent’s contractor to discuss the creation of site access and a proposed working platform to be installed at the sewage treatment works at Earl Shilton, south west of Leicester. The proposed plant for the site works required temporary works access as well as a working platform for the concrete pump and hydraulic (Kobelco CKE700) crawler crane.
